...March, 2004

Greetings!

This month we present just three of the many books Unity has published on the subject of prayer. Glenn Mosley, CEO of the Association of Unity Churches says, "Unity Church itself does not have a conclusive unitary method of prayer, although there are common elements among its various practices. One of Unity's most nearly universal elements is that the time of prayer is called "the silence."   The silence is a frame of awareness entered into for the purpose of putting ourselves in touch with the Infinite Wisdom so that our souls may listen to the "still small voice." (I Kings 19:12). Unity believes that we are never separate from God and that our time of prayer is either to establish or to re-establish our awareness of that Truth. We pray to know God more fully; we believe God already knows us."

Each of these books offer unique and helpful suggestions that will apply to our own lives and to our life of prayer.

Happy reading, Bill

Handbook of Positive Prayer by Hypatia Hasbrouch

Softcover, 145 pp., $12.95

As the title suggests, HANDBOOK OF POSITIVE PRAYER is meant to be a guide. The various prayer techniques are simply some possible ways to pray, ways that can help us avoid "vain repetition" or freshen our approach to the experience of communicating with God.  The example of specific techniques are just that, examples.

We are encouraged to use words that are most comfortable for us.  The important thing is that we pray.

Hypatia Hasbrouck explores the many practical and uplifting ways that positive prayer can work in your lives.  She guides us through a powerful seven-step prayer model as well as shares the benefits of visualization, prayer journaling, use of affirmations and denials, and other special prayer treatments and techniques.

This book can be utilized on many levels.  It is up to us to decide how far and how deeply we wish to go.  Each chapter begins with a discussion of a topic and then moves into an Adventure segment which serves as a bridge to help us transport the philosophical aspect into our everyday lives.

In this book we come to an understanding of what prayer is, why we pray, whether prayers are always answered, and much, much more. We find comfort in knowing that Spirit is drawing together a world community of people who pray. More and more, we want to connect with each other on a spiritual level.  It is a divine mandate.

The Prayer Way to Health, Wealth and Happiness

Hardcover, 360 pp., $12.95

Part of the Unity Classic Library Series, this is a practical book, offering a commonsense approach to problem solving through prayer and the activity generated by listening for answers to our prayers.

The eldest son of Unity cofounders Charles and Myrtle Fillmore was raised in an environment of affirmative prayer, so it was natural that he would write about prayer as a means to achieve health, wealth, and happiness.  The thirteen sections of this book are based on Truth affirmations Lowell Fillmore compiled from experience.  He called these affirmations "gadgets," which he found valuable in meeting everyday problems involving health, prosperity, and human relationships. A fourteenth section contains Lowell Fillmore's reflections on the Lord's Prayer.
